By Robert Butts I am a fan of Sorby tools (and Hartville, the supplier), which is why I was surprised when this gouge arrived. The grinding was coarse and the tip of the gouge was burned. I don't know if it left the factory that way, or, Hartville had a customer return it and it was reground by the customer or Hartville. It should not have been shipped that way. Regardless, now I have to regrind a brand new tool (easier and quicker than return/re-order), and I should not have to do that with a quality product. Normally, 5 stars for Sorby/Hartville, but not this time.
Sorby 3/8" Fingernail Bowl GougeMar 23, 2011
By Hayes I purchased one of this when I started turning 7 years ago and it is still in use. I have purchased 3 more since I got the first one. I do demo's and I like to have a couple of spares so I don't have to stop and sharpen the tool. I also teach beginning woodturning classes through out the year and I like for my students to be able to use a good turning tool. Stays sharp for a long time. If you want a good bowl gouge this is the one to get. Must you must have a sharpening system to sharpen this fingernail bowl gouge.
