Effective at noise reductionAug 19, 2007
By mo My husband bought a stow-a-way earmuff for me so he could persuade me to use his tractor to mow the grass. I have some nerve deafness and was concerned about losing more hearing. Well, it turned out that it was perfect for running the vacuum (actually I own several of them) which due to owning a collie I was spending my life doing so. It tones down the noise so well that I do not even hear the phone ring while wearing them. I am researching to find out if there is a similar model with a different color (this one is red) so I can consider wearing it in the office environment. I have found other uses for it as well. I wear it while working on my desktop at the home office while my husband watches TV in the same room. BTW, I never did mow the grass!

Worked well until they brokeJan 09, 2009
By B. Werner I liked these fine, and for the price they were great, but I didn't abuse them and they didn't last very long. I went to take them off yesterday and they snapped in half.
While they worked they were perfect for listing to the radio with earbuds while I worked sawing, sanding, etc.
I think next time I'll get some with a flexible over-the-head piece so they won't snap so easily.

A Good DealJan 29, 2011
By Janet I compared several ear protectors and this one was really not bad:
Best: Leightning L3 R-03318: Howard Leight R-03318 Leightning L3 Shooter's Premium Earmuff
NRR rating 30
Attenuation at various frequencies: 34 at 125, 36 at 500, 38 at 1000, 44 at 4000, 45 at 8000
Very comfortable, lightweight, fully adjustable without fear of breaking it, padded headband.
Muffles office chatter, typing, and lighting or computer humming very well. Does something, but not enough, to block loud mechanical hums and banging.
Bottom line: This is my new favorite. It's so comfortable!
Acceptable: AO Safety 90559 AO Safety 90559 Folding Earmuff
NRR rating 21
Attenuation at various frequencies: Don't know
Comfortable, lightweight. Plastic unpadded headband adjusts in preset increments, and you have to be gentle when you put it on to avoid breaking it; the plastic broke after a couple years.
Reduces the volume of voices but doesn't block them, muffles lighting or computer humming, actually amplifies the sound of typing.
Bottom line: Despite its lower NRR rating, I used this one for years and liked it a lot.
Uncomfortable: Peltor Optime 105 H10A Peltor H10A Optime 105 Over-the-Head Earmuff
NRR rating 30
Attenuation at various frequencies: 21 at 125, 37 at 500, 41 at 1000, 43 at 4000, 41 at 8000
Uncomfortably tight fit, heavier than the others, padded adjustable headband.
Muffles office chatter, typing, and lighting or computer humming well. Does something, but not enough, to block loud mechanical hums and banging. (Same effectiveness as the Leightning)
Bottom line: This was effective but so uncomfortable squeezing my head I didn't want to wear it. And I have a small-ish head.
Unwearable: Tasco Golden Eagle 2950 Tasco 210-02950 29db Golden Eagle Blk 1pos Ovr-The-Head Earmuff
(sold by another vendor as "built to military specifications", no brand name given, at twice the price)
NRR rating 29
Attenuation at various frequencies: 21 at 125, 36 at 500, 43 at 1000, 37 at 4000, 36 at 8000
Very uncomfortable. The adjustable headband looks padded, but in reality there's a piece of unpadded plastic that digs straight into the sides of your head.
Did not block sound for me at all, because the earpieces were too big for my head, leaving a gap. Maybe this would fit better on a man with a big head.
Bottom line: Hated it.
Headband snappedAug 20, 2011
By brian The headband snapped when I was putting them on my head. I only used them a couple of times and they broke within 2 weeks.
DO NOT BUY THESE EAR MUFFSJun 07, 2011
By Dustin G. Haugh I don't know if you've noticed but there is a big problem with these ear muffs breaking at the head band. They might be cheap and not exactly the most effective, which I can see because of the low cost, but what good is it AT ALL if they BREAK. I got a few of these for my woodworking business and today the last one broke. Honestly it kind of hurt when it snapped on my head but hey, that's what I get for buying this crap. I'm getting so sick of companies making crap like this.
