5Best 6" finishing sanderDec 20, 2009
By Lewis Barrett
As a boat restorer, I own many sanders, including a 6" Porter Cable and this Festool, the ETS 150/5.

If you decide that you are interested in an ETS 150, the first question you may have is: "Should I get the 3mm or the 5MM stroke unit?" When I went to get mine, only the 5mm unit was in stock, so I took a chance on it. As it happens, I think this is the ideal one to get for most people. Fine finish work will not show any swirling whatsoever. I have used mine for intermediate sanding between coats of varnish, which is a notoriously easy place to see sanding marks. None are visible, therefore I surmise that the slightly more aggressive action of the 5mm version carries no downside whatsoever, while being slightly more aggressive in erespect to material removal. This means you save time with no negative effects.

If you are planning to sand flat surfaces with this unit, go ahead and order the hard pad for it immediately. This will maintain a flat profile on all your work and will make you wonder if you really need a sanding block for most work. This machine is that good.

Here are the benefits of this Festool over like but lesser sanders:

1. Superb dust collection when hooked up to a good shop vac. Another note: I find that I am able to use my PC dust collection hose (with some minor effort) so if you already have a hose for dust collection for some other brand, try it first before buying the rather expensive Festool accessory.

2. Festool media (sand paper) is superb and not at all expensive. I usually use 3M Imperial with my other sanders, but the Festool paper that you really need to use for maximum dust collection efficency is, if anything, superior to the 3M and it costs no more, maybe even a bit less.

3. The smooth action of the ETS150 almost makes sanding fun. You don't press down with this machine. Just let the weight of the tool rest on the work piece and guide/slide it around. Marvelous, flat, beautiful results with a minimum of effort.

4. Well packaged in "Systainer" that allows you to store the tool and the dust collection hose safely. This is a lifetime buy, so you'll want to treat this tool right!

Go ahead and buy it...this very one with the 5mm stroke. You cannpt get a better large finish sander. ! I rate it at 5 stars, an essentially perfect mark, but then this tool is the very best of it's type on the market so it is merited.
