Great valueAug 16, 2006
By R. Hart These Japanese gouges and the chisels are well executed tools for the money. I have no real complaints. I have very expensive handmade Japanese chisels that don't perform noticable better at the bench. These are a very good value.

Quality vs Price can't be beatFeb 17, 2008
By Dewey Torres I carefully bought these after searching the internet and found that Grizzly has the best chisels for the price. Once they arrived it was confirmed. They are built well and perform good right out of the box. With a bit of honing they are amazing. For the beginning to amateur woodworker who does not use these to make a living, they will find that this is the perfect tool.

Japanese chiselsMay 03, 2008
By James E. Reed I have quite a few Japanese chisels and thought this set would be a nice addition to the flock. There is good news and bad news on the hoops. Most Japanese chisels require hoop setting by the user. Good news is that these hoops are already set. Bad news is that you cannot do it yourself without alot of trouble. The hoops are a little high for my taste--I like about 1/8" of wood exposed to absorb the hammer blow. These are set almost flush. After removing and setting one, I decided to leave well enough alone. Not a big problem, but I like setting my own hoops.
As for the chisels, they take big chunks and do it quickly. I hammered for quite some time without any edge failures. These chisels are also easy to hone.
I would rate this set of Japanese chisels as an outstanding value. The fit and finish is nice and the edges hold up well. A real bargain at about ten bucks each.

Excellent Value for Price - Great Set of GougesApr 27, 2011
By El Guapo I'd give this set 4.5 stars if possible, only because, as a previous reviewer pointed out, they are less sharp out of the box than they should be. Not really a tremendous problem in my eyes, though - eventually all blades will need sharpening. With a tiny bit of sharpening work up front, I found this set immediately very useful. This is definitely a lifetime keeper set for me. The handles are excellent - very comfortable to work with and constructed well to withstand hammer-tapping (as they proved the first day out of the box). There are certainly better sets out there with better steel that will hold an edge longer. But in my opinion, this set is an excellent deal for the price if you don't mind a bit of sharpening work. I am extremely pleased.

Great ProductApr 29, 2010
By Craig At about ten bucks a pop this chisel set is a great value. They work as well as chisels costing a lot more. Craig
