Hard to decide between 4 and 5 starsJul 31, 2008
By New England Yankee I struggled a bit to decide whether to rate this 4 or 5 stars, but in the end decided on 5 based on value for the money.
The machine is quite well-made. Plenty of power, smooth operation, generally good fit and finish. It produces good results. One thing I particularly appreciate in this machine is that the dust collection hood is shallow enough that you don't have to crank the planer table too far down when switching over to jointer mode. I like the single handle table lift. Table adjustment is smooth and easy. The dust collection works very well.
I don't like a few things. First, I dislike the Euro-style guard, but that's just preference. Second, the grind on the tables is unusual - sort of a cross-hatched ripple. It actually works very well and eliminates the suction drag you get on some jointers and planers with polished tables. It was a pain in the neck to clean when the machine arrived, though! Last, and most seriously, the fence is minimal and hard to adjust. Its support is sheet metal and the fence is a medium-weight extrusion. The support uses multiple locking knobs, and the fence itself is easy to twist. You need to check the angle (or for square) at several points after adjusting it. How serious this is depends on your use. As I only use the fence at 90 degrees, it was acceptable as it is solid and stable once set.
The footprint of this machine is new for Jet, and there isn't a mobile base listed specifically for it in the market for it as of this writing.
This is a lot of machine for the money - even at list price. Its closest competition is Grizzly's G0633, which is comparably-priced when you factor in shipping. As I was able to buy the Jet on sale and with no shipping charges at considerably less than the Grizzly, the decision was easy. I would buy it again. Is it a Mini-Max, Felder, or even a Laguna or Rojek? No, but it's not priced like them either, which gets it 5 stars. If Jet were to incorporate a better fence, it would get the 5 stars without the qualifier comments.
UPDATE - In response to another reviewer regarding lack of planer table adjustments: READ YOUR MANUAL! The table is EASILY adjusted using the 4 setscrews provided for the purpose in the column support.

JJP-12 Exceeded my expectationsJul 09, 2009
By rgifford I did not purchase this through Amazon, but seeing only two reviews on this machine thought it might be helpful for me to add another review.
I have had the machine for a about a month, and have really been putting it through its paces the past couple of weeks. In planing no more than 1/16th of board at a time, I have experienced no tear out and no hint of slow down planing 12" maple. This machine has power to spare.
I purchased the JJP-12 because I needed both a jointer and a planer and have a small shop. Has anyone priced a 12" jointer? On those merits alone it is a good value. This feature is worth several thousand dollars.
A comparable stand alone planer would cost $500 or more.
My only complaint which was mentioned in an earlier review, is that the aluminum fence is not as nice as steel. The results that the tool produces and the space savings make this an excellent deal.
I am so happy with this purchase that I will be looking to Jet for my future shop purchases.

I like it more each time I use it.Sep 29, 2010
By D. Erickson This item was delivered to my house a few days before the estimated time of arrival which made me happy. The shipping crate had an interesting "tilt" indicator which showed the crate had not been dropped or laid on a side. The only thing I did not initially like about this machine was the crudely finished surfaces on that jointer table. As noted by another reviewer the table surface has a wavy grooved texture. I found some areas of this to be so rough it pulled the fibers out of the cleaning cloth I was using to remove the protective coating. The distal end of the table seemed to have a rough bur on it that made it harder to push boards across. I finally took my sander and file and went over the entire surface. After that and a couple coats of wax the jointer surface is almost as nice as my more polished table saw surface. Due to the rough finish of table surfaces I was going to give this machine only 4 stars, but that was over a month ago and I've been using it so much I had almost forgotten my initial reaction to it. I'm giving the machine 5 stars now based on how it works and the product that comes out it. The boards I've jointed and planed have had no problems, the machine works just like it is supposed to. I did not have to do any adjustments and could use the factory settings without any problems. The thing I like best about this machine is how fast I can switch from jointer to planer. I can easily do this in less than 30 seconds. That is less time it took me to pull out and set up my portable planer. This machine replaces a 6" jointer and 12" portable planer I had been using for years. Before buying the Jet I was concerned that I already had a 12" planer so why get another. Even though I think the portable 12" planer gave a nicer finish, I find the Jet combo machine easier and faster to use (and much better dust collection design). One other thing I found I like about this Jet is the space it takes up is less than specified in the product description. I found I can remove the blade guard and slide the jointer fence to cover the blade, thus reducing that dimension considerably. I would like a nice mobile base for it. Right now I keep it on a Jet pallet truck I had bought for a different purpose. My workshop space is extremely limited so every square foot of space is needed. I haven't needed to change the blades yet, so maybe I'll comment on that in the future.

Long Term Review- Still one of my favoritesJul 18, 2011

"DIY Mark"
I purchased the Jet JJP-12 HH a little over a year ago. If you're considering one you've probably read all kinds of tests, forums and reviews. I'll give you my impressions to add to the mix. I have used the machine enough to have needed to rotate the cutting head 1 time. And that is the first great thing about this tool. If you get the carbide insert head you just loosen up the cutters and turn them 90 degrees and it's ready to go again (takes a bit of patience...there are lot of them). No more fusing with getting the cutter parallel with the table or right depth like my old HSS delta. Next is the footprint. It takes up the same space as my old Delta 6" jointer but gives me a planer too. Nice for a small shop. Really any shop...we all need more room for our toys. I must talk a bit about power. This tool has got it. It easily planes dense hardwood without hesitation. Lastly, is capacity. Moving from a 6" jointer to a 12" is such a joy. Before I was limited to 6" wide boards. I have a nice resaw bandsaw (Laguna) with a 12" resaw capacity but it really did give me much versatility because I could only face plane 6" wide material. Now I after I resaw I can face plane up to the bandsaw capacity and then quickly convert and surface plane it to final thickness. OK, with any tool there are limitations. Here are a couple that you should consider. First this baby get's hot. If you are letting it run for a while doing a lot of surface planing the motor heats up. Enough where you can't leave your hand on the side of the cabinet. I haven't had any problems but it does concern me. The jointer table is short. Part of the compact design is to shorten up the tables. I think it's like 55". A bit longer than my 6" delta but short of a DJ-20 or powermatic. I wish it had a full 72" length table when I have 8 foot long stock. I try and set up rollers but the results are sketchy and less than perfect. If you are doing 5 foot or shorter stock there is no issue and your edges or faces will be true and flat. But longer than that and it starts to get tricky and demands a great deal of technique. Last, I should mention conversion. Really it's a breeze to change from jointer to planer and back. But it is a deterrent. Nothing like face planing a stack of wood and switching to planer mode for thickness planing and realizing you forgot one board and need to convert back. Like any machine it takes some set up and that takes time. One more rant....I don't like the table treatment. Rather than being a fully ground table top they have ground parallel lines in the surface, which is suppose to reduce drag of the stock when you push it through. I haven't found it better and it's harder to keep clean and slick. Overall, no regrets about pulling the trigger on this machine. It has worked tirelessly and allow me to handle wide stock. Essentially it improve the capacity of my other tools.

great machine for a small shopJun 01, 2011

I have a very small shop (500 square feet)and this machine is more than earning it's keep. Knife and table alignment is amazingly easy (15 minutes to align jointer tables, knives, and planer table). 12" is a perfect size for me and I always wanted a planer and jointer that were the same width. The corrugated finish is a little weird, as I like slippery polished iron, but works great. For the money, this is a "no-brainer".
