4Great clamp but pads *do* stainAug 03, 2005
By LW
I bought a couple of these from amazon about a year ago. Service was great and I've used them many times. the 3" reach is nice and the clamping force is excellent.

Only small issue with these is you have to keep some scraps of wood around to use as clamp pads, the plastic ones definitely stain whatever they touch. Don't clamp them directly to your work unless you are going to paint it and don't care if it gets stained.

4Great clamp. Threads too courseOct 24, 2006
By Adam Mangrich "Amangrich"
I bought a few of these clamps the other day. I removed the plastic pads immediately because I use separate scrap wood to prevent damage. I figured the plastic pads would not protect from the clamp digging into my work. I do not like the course threads as compared to the light duty 3712s. I can not get as tight of bond as I can with the light duty 3712s. Other than that, a great clamp.

1Good Clamp, but Pads Stain PartsMar 25, 2005
By Robert V "Robert V"
I recently purchased 15 clamps for a big project I was working on that required two 12x96x.75 plywood panels to be clamped and glued together. After removing the clamps I noticed that wherever the clamp pad touched the wood was a big puddle of oil. I called the manufactureer and they suggested that this was normal and to try using mineral spirits to remove the stain. Mineral spirits didn't work and I had to trash $70 worth of ribbon sapelle plywood.

Before purchasing this clamp, check with Jorgensen to see if they have resolved the oily pad problem.

4The pads stain, but duct tape helpsFeb 19, 2012
By F. B. O'Duan
If you ask me, duct tape isn't all it's cracked up to be. Some people talk like it's God's gift to handymen, but I've never found it that useful. Today, however, I was glad for my duct tape (that is, once I found it, dusted it off, and wondered why the hell I got such a huge roll).

As others have mentioned, the pads on these clamps leave an oily residue that's difficult or impossible to remove. Which is a major drawback, especially for fine woodworking. I tried to clean the oil off the pads using a paper towel, then soapy water, then various solvents. No dice. Finally, I just applied a layer of duct tape to each pad to prevent it from staining, and that seems to work.

I know it's a crude solution, but these are otherwise great clamps at a great price. An equivalent Bessey clamp costs almost twice as much, so you'll come out way ahead buying a pair of these, even if you also get the duct tape. And you never know--maybe you'll find that roll of super-sticky, plastic-sealed, residue-leaving cloth handier than I do.

5My Favorite ClampsDec 09, 2010

An amazingly high quality clamp at an incredibly low price (in my opinion). And I believe it's even American made!! Like other reviewers, I have experienced wood stains from the cushioned pads. I'm hoping they have corrected the problem on the four more that I just ordered. But I still love these clamps!
