5great little chuckNov 03, 2007
By D. Eppler
I have only used this as an expanding chuck without any plans to use the threaded portion. This chuck feels like a quality piece when you get it. The expansion holds quite well and runs true. I used this little chuck to turn a 8" diameter x 5" thick mahogany bowl!

4An excellent accessory - with a few drawbacks...Sep 28, 2007
By Tivo Man
I purchased this chuck in order to turn some small bowls and other open ended hollow form shapes on an inexpensive Harbor Freight lathe. So cost was an issue and this chuck was on sale for $20 with free shipping if the order went above $25. The extra $5 was easy to arrange here on Amazon. ;)

This is I fear however something of a mixed review so please read it carefully as what is right with this chuck is really right but what is wrong can be more than a bit of an annoyance.

First off the chuck body itself is very well made. It is solid and spun onto the adapter I was using in a very solid fashion. There was no run out or wobble. This was one of the things that PSI did very very right!

I was in the end very successful using the expanding collet portion of the chuck. It hold the work very tightly and everything I have tried with it has been held securely. The size of the collet is somewhat small. So for turning smaller elements it works very well. For the cost, as I mentioned I paid about $20 on sale here on Amazon, it is a great addition to anyone's wood turning arsenal. The largest object I have turned with it was 5" bowl that was 2" to 2.5" in depth.

However, my first use for it was with the "wood screw" as a screw chuck. The screw in this case being a typical double ended "hanger screw", i.e. 1 side being a machine screw and the other a typical wood screw. A small hex set screw is provided in order to keep the screw from seating to solidly in the chuck. The tolerances are tight but it can be accomplish as per the 1/2 page worth of instruction manual that comes with the chuck. Once the chuck was setup in this fashion it held the small 4x3 black walnut bowl blank securely and I was able to rough turn the outside of the bowl. However here is where I encountered the first problem with this setup. When I attempted to unscrew the blank from the chuck the screw came out of the chuck rather than out of the wood. By screwing it back in and putting some sideways force on the bowl thus binding the metal screw inside the chuck just a bit, I was able to unscrew the bowl blank successfully and then remove the screw from the chuck.

The second time I tried this I drilled a larger hole to ease some of the pressure on the screw. This allowed the work to "tear out" on the screw and it simply slipped off after a bit of tool pressure was applied.

The third time I tried this was with a kiln dried bit of Maple I was turning into an Apple I was entirely unsuccessful in removing the screw. Oh it unscrewed from the chuck with great ease. It was however very very solidly locked into the wood. I tried the trick I listed above but to no avail. In the end I grew frustrated enough that I tried pliers, which damaged the threads a bit and still didn't release the wood. I then tried 2 pieces of scrap wood to protect the machine threads and my bench vise with again no success. At this point I felt that the wood screw was a write-off and clamped the visible portion of the screw directly in the metal jaws of the vise, which destroyed it, and the removal was easy.

So for those looking at this as a dual purpose chuck... don't. For those looking for an inexpensive expansion chuck for smallish objects (bowls, clock inserts, etc...) buy it. It will work well for you.

5No More Waste Wood*****Nov 16, 2008
By D. Shedd
I was a little wary when I saw an O-ring on this assembly. But it works flawlessly. I turned a 8 inch platter 1 1/2 inches thick from rock maple. I turned a smaller base and then spindal turned a column. I cut a 1 3/8 inch tennon on the column which went into the hole left in the platter bottom and everything went together smoothly. The best part was not having to use a glue block or have any waste wood. This product is excellent.

5It works!!Mar 23, 2009

I purchased this chuck as a way to do some quick bowl turning without investing in the larger, more expensive chucks. This chuck is amazingly simple in its appearance, giving me pause, but held the work completely secure. Very easy to use. Hold off if you will be buying a four jaw chuck in the near future, since this chuck would be redundant.

4PSI Expanding Lathe ChuckMay 28, 2009
By D. Campbell
I bought the 1 X 8 tpi so I wouldn't have to fool with the draw bolt required by the Morse taper chuck. The pieces are all nicely machined and appear to be plated. The expanding-jaw collet works fine with no slippage.

The screw mount feature works OK, too. The screw is a hanger-bolt threaded to fit the chuck on one end and a wood screw on the other. The threaded end is too long, in my opinion, as much of it extended out of the chuck, so I cut about 1/2 inch off. Another concern is the large size of the screw. The hole drilled for the screw is rather large and limits what can be attached to the item to be turned.

I am happy with the product and Amazon's pricing and shipping deals are a bonus.
