Excellent turning toolsAug 29, 2009
By S. Linn These are excellent lathe tools. I have some top of the line Robert Sorby and Crown lathe chisels that, I feel, don't compare to the cutting quality of these tools - and they cost twice as much as these! Great tools for a beginner or pro!

Nice bargain bowl setJan 19, 2009
By James S. Brown I'm just getting started turning bowls, and this set was a valuable addition to my collection of tools. The quality is high compared to the cost; the tools are well made, comfortable to use, and substantial. The box they come in is good for collecting shavings and sawdust. I hate to throw it away, but I don't have a whole lot of use for it.
The most important thing about gouges is keeping them sharp, and there are lots of ways to do that. I haven't used any high-end tools, so I can't compare these ones to them with regard to holding an edge, but I've been happy with these so far. They have sufficient mass for bowl turning, though, and I've been comfortable with the profiles they came with. The scrapers are similarly substantial, though with every bowl I turn I rely on them a little less.
I paid more for one bowl gouge at Woodcraft than I did for this set, and I feel that this set is of comparable quality (aside from the handles, which are more rudimentary). I recommend this set to the beginning bowl turner.

Excellent tools at this price pointJan 09, 2011
By Terry McCammon Are these high end, powder metal technology at $150 each. No, they are decent, more or less high speed steel, at $15 each. At this price point, they are excellent value. They are far better tools than I am a wood turner. They hold an edge well, they are solidly made and the handles are mounted on center (which is more than I can say for other, more expensive tools I have seen). The difference between these tools and expensive tools is edge holding. These are well balanced and feel good in the hand. I can sharpen a bit more often for the great difference in the price between these and the name brands.

Wood Turning Chisel ReviewJun 10, 2011
By eddie I needed new chisels and after shopping around decided I couldn't afford some of the "name" chisels. I decided to try the PSI 4 piece bowl turning set. To my surprise I found these to be excellent quality tools. The scrapers are made from a full 5/16" steel which adds a little beef in comparison to some other chisels. The gouges are made from a full 5/8" and 1/2" roll stock with a nice grind on them. The grind is similar to a "finger nail" grind which rounds the front and sharpens a ways back on the shaft. This reduces the blunt front end and makes for smoother turning.
The handles are nice...they are long and give excellent control. The 2 gouges are 22+" long overall giving you leverage. They look good also.
The scrapers: the 1" is beefy yet you can shave with it. The side scraper is great, it has an indent behind the head that allows you to get a nice curve to the inside bowl and leave a lip without having to work from the opposite side of the lathe or lean across your tool rest.
I bought a diamond 2 side sharpening hone for $10 at the same time and when the chisels get a little dull I make about 3 passes over the cutting edges lightly and I am back in business. The hone is Made in USA and sold here on Amazon for $10.
These are nice tools and I got the set for 1/2 the price of 1 "name" gouge.
I have already recommended these to friends. I have a lot of chisels but none compare to these.
When it's time I will buy'em again. Thanks.

PSI Woodworking LCBT4 4 Piece Bowl Turning Lathe Chisel SetJan 18, 2011
By JP I am a novice woodturner and this set is a very good set for the cost. They were received very promptly and in very good condition. The tools are very sharp and they seem to stay sharp while I am turning seasoned pecan. The tool lengths are very good and easy to control. I would recomend these to any one especially those that are just getting started in the hobby. I have several PSI items and have been very satisfaied with all of them.
