5review 30301 3 " cross slide viseFeb 23, 2011
By M. Burcin
I went thru 2 vise purchases and returns before spending the bucks on this vise. Any of the low end stuff is chi-com junk and is poorly made and has big tolerances making them hard to adjust on a drill press if of course you want accuracy. My ENCO purchase had a frozen jaw, my other purchase was a low end Palmgren made by the chi-coms and weighed 82 lbs, too big and heavy for my Delta drill press. The 30301 Palmgren is USA made, you will know because even the cardboard box is high quality. It is machined to extremely high tolerances and has no gear lash in either direction. It's 25 some pounds and fits nicely on the drill press table. You pay for the close machining but to me it it worth it. I'm sick of chinese crap. And great service from Amazon as always.

5palmgren 30301 ReviewOct 09, 2008
By K. R. Goodnight "Pen Maker"
Excellent vise, 25 lbs. X-Y dovetails tight, no slop, smooth controls, and
is well made. I am using the vise in pen making which speeds up drilling blanks of different sizes. I replaced the jaws with UHMW v-groved to hold blank. Works very well and consider the vise well worth the money.

5Expensive, but well worth it.Jul 16, 2011

The Palmgren 30301 cross slide vise demonstrates the truth of the adage that "You get what you pay for." Its made in the US and the workmanship and quality of all parts are evident.

As another reviewer noted, the item comes well packaged. It was in a thick cardboard, double box with double plastic straps around it. All this is a plus given the weight of the vise and the always present danger that someone will drop the package.

On un-packing the vise I found that the crank handles were reversed to prevent possible damage during shipping. (They are easily put right by removing the acorn nut and changing the direction.). The vise fit well on the table of my 12-inch bench top drill press and can be easily attached with 3/8 bolts and "t" nuts. The vise jaws are well machined, and there is no wiggle in the closing jaw as you tighten it toward the fixed jaw. I definitely would not remove the vise from the X/Y axis table and try to use it on stand-alone tasks. The bottom of the vise is finely ground and dents or dings may ruin accuracy or make it difficult to fit the vise back on the ways and the gib.

The X and Y cross slides move smoothly with no play (gib adjustment screws on the side are accessible and would take care of any problem.) I have only one complaint: turning the crank on the cross slide under the vise is very stiff. (This seems due to with the bearing/washers in the handle. I attempted to adjust the gibs but this didn't solve the problem. I will try to call Palmgren and ask if there is a way to adjust the screw assembly.) I tested the accuracy of the handle increment collars (using a dial indicator against the moving cross slide) and both X and Y axis were within .001-002 over .500 of an inch compared to the dial indicator.

At 3 inches the vise is a little smaller than the common 4-inch models, but this doesn't seem to limit it. I work with metals and found the vise rigid when drilling a 3/8 hole in steel. Given the size of the vise, however, I doubt that it is suitable for milling in a milling machine. (And certainly not to try to mill in a drill press.)

In sum, the 30301 far exceeds in quality anything made in China or India. I had a Harbor Freight 4-inch cross slide vise that I struggled with for years to try to make accurate with no success. Sure, its only $40, but it doesn't work. Its forty dollars wasted. Although, the 30301 is expensive at $380, this price on Amazon is far less then $530 to $645 Enco or MSC charge for the same item.

Kudos to Palmgren for its product and to Amazon for its fast delivery and great price.
