Has A Lot Of Potential With A Little Bit Of WorkAug 15, 2011
By plmcc This vise is much less expensive than a typical Cross Vise found online. And when I took it ALL apart, I found out why.
The "ways" (the surfaces that mate to one another that allow the slides of the vise to "slide" on top of each other) had been surface ground in only a few areas. This fact, in my opinion, causes the vise's slides to create a lot of friction when moving. This, in turn, requires a lot of force when spinning the indicated handles in order to get the slides to move. So, what's the solution? I purchased a horizontal rotary hone that allowed me to remove the relatively rough surface from the "ways" that needed to be re-surfaced. After doing that, this vise works REALLY smooth. So, when I add the cost of the hone to the original price of the vise, I'm still WAY ahead of what I would have had to pay for a vise that moves smoothly right out of the box. And now for the ratings result: THREE stars out of the box, FIVE stars after the re-surfacing.
So, in my opinion, if you're pretty handy with an electric drill and a horizontal hone, this vise can become a truly useful addition to your machine tool toolbox.

FYI metric dial indicators and poor finishAug 15, 2011
By T Whitehouse Hello All
Just a couple of comments about this product. First, the dial indicators on this vise are in metric. I know it states this clearly in the description, but I missed that. That's my fault. I have nothing against the metric system, it is a lot simpler than the imperial system. It just didn't dawn on me that this would be a Chinese import. The price should have tipped me off. Having done some machining in a past life I expected a little better quality. That brings up my second comment. The shafts at the end of the ends of the cross feed and longitudinal screws were both forged square. They were both bent and the hand cranks would not turn true nor snug up tight against the casting. The threads on on feed screw were galled so it would have required chasing the threads with a die.
I think for wood working or non precision work this would be adequate. Just not for the tasks I need to do.
PS I did check out the Palmgren website and they do have a US made version of this product with a much higher level of fit and finish. And it sells for $586. You always get what you pay for.

I pushed this unit for use with a bench top drill press and I'm glass I did. It's VERY well made, and one you lube it up with milspec teflon grease or oil, it's got a perfectly fluid motion of the two axis'.
The quality if great, expectly when compare to cheaper versions.
Satisfactory for my needsJun 08, 2011
By R. Cave Read to many reviews that warned about buying a cheap one, so I decided to get this one, and I am very pleased I did.
