4too shortFeb 27, 2007
By Henry Cargen
In spite of the quality of construction that went in to this vise the thread on the travel screw handles is not long enough to engage the locking insert of the nut for the traverse handles. This tension is important to the smooth operation of the slide. I was forced to use locktite to secure the nut at the right tension. Other than this shortfall it is a good piece of equipment

4A few assy problemsAug 23, 2009
By wauwis "wauwis"
Like the other reviewer I had some initial assy problems. Palmgren sent new parts immediately. I like this cross vise a lot and think it is well worth the price compared to a cheap cross vise. I use it for virtually everything on my drill press. This is not a precision milling vise, but for the home workshop it is probably the best out there.

4Good value, acceptable qualityJul 22, 2011
By Ed Scherer
The first thing you'll notice when you get this vice (aside from the rather inadequate packaging) is that it is quite heavy. After assembling it, I weighed it: 27 kg (59 lbs.) If you plan to use it on a drill press, you should check to see that your drill press table is stout enough to handle the weight.

My first impression of the vice (aside from it being larger and heavier than I was expecting!) was that it is of average quality for Chinese-made metal items. Cast parts are a little crude, but acceptable. The paint doesn't appear to be of very high quality.

I noted two differences in the unit I received versus the official product image shown on this Amazon product listing page: the color is different (the unit I received is charcoal gray instead of blue) and the "Palmgren" emblem is different (the unit I received has it on a plate affixed to the vice body instead of cast-in). I also noted that the product was referred to as a "30601B" in the provided manual; I suspect that the differences I noted were part of a newer "B" model update. These are minor cosmetic differences and I actually prefer the gray for my application. See the "Customer Images" that I have added for this product listing.

Assembly is easy and well described in the 8-page "Operating Manual and Parts List" (6 pages in English, 2 pages in Spanish). Basically, you just need to attach the cross feed crank handle and the longitudinal feed crank handle and loosen the set screws enough to allow the sliding members to slide. Also, you will note that all three cranks are very stiff at first; you must heed the advice in the manual: "This vise is shipped with a protective coating. This coating should be removed before operation. Remove protective coating with penetrating oil." I blasted the vice (especially the threaded rods and bearing areas) with PB Blaster, wiped it off after a few minutes, and then applied some oil to all moving parts. Everything worked pretty smoothly after that and I found the vice to be quite usable.

A few specifications that aren't provided, but that I measured:

weight: 27 kg (59 lbs.)
number of mounting lugs on base: 5
mounting lug diameter: approximately 16 mm (5/8 inches)
base thickness at mounting lugs: approximately 16 mm (5/8 inches)
4 of the mounting lugs form perfect square; spacing of centers of each of these lugs to an adjacent one: 167 mm (6 9/16 inches)
end lug center location relative to center of line connecting centers of two closest neighboring lugs: 67 mm (2 5/8 inches)

In addition to the vice, the box also contained the manual and three Allen keys (3 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm) suitable for the various socket-head bolts and set screws.

I am satisfied with this product and expect to leave the vice attached to my drill press table.

This vise is head and shoulders better than my old shop-fox (don't waste your money on it). The quality is so much better. I believe this will be with me for many years.

4Acceptable product for the priceMar 30, 2011
By mgraber
I read the previous reviews and decided to order this cross vise. I was hoping for something with smoother action on the handles but at the end of the day, I got something that will work and at a fair price. Like the other reviewers said, it's just doesn't have the feel of a precision instrument rather it feels like what we've come to expect from Chinese tools; a little loose.
