Well done, large cross vise...Jan 13, 2006
By Victor H. Agresti

Palmgren 30801 CV80 Cross Vise
First off, here are the CORRECT specs for this vise:
Jaw width: 8" Jaw opening: 0" to 8 1/8" (the supplied manual incorrectly says 6") Lower slide table travels up to 8 3/16" from front to back (specs say 8") Upper slide table travels up to 7.5" from side to side (specs say 8")
The Amazon photo is of the 6" model. Click on customer photos to see the 8" model.
Palmgren also sells this vise under the Sears Roebuck [Craftsman] name for the same price (8 in. Drill Press Vise, item #00924091000 model #24091). However, Sears wanted $46 to ship it to my house, plus sales tax. Except for the Sears and Palmgren models, I was unable to locate any other 8" cross vise.
The first CV80 arrived damaged. Palmgren packaged this VERY heavy vise in a 100% cardboard box. Unsurprisingly, the box was a mess and one of the cast-iron bolt-down lugs was broken off. Took me two hours to make an all-wood shipping crate to ship it back to Amazon, as no cardboard box could successfully hold this beast. Amazon paid for return and replacement shipping. The new one was undamaged, even though that box was [also] broken through on the bottom.
The vise is shipped with a protective coating, so it needed thorough cleaning; accomplished with paper towels and paint thinner. It comes fully assembled, except the crank handles need to be bolted on. Both handles required modification. Each was about 1/16" too long, so when the supplied nut was tightened to hold the crank onto its corresponding feed screw, the handle locked the screw in place, so turning it was impossible. After carefully removing the excess handle material with a floor model sander and metal file, the cranks worked fine, except, now, the two "gibs"needed adjustment. The gib is a piece of steel 1/8" thick 0.5" wide and 8" long, used to adjust play in a sliding table's dovetail slot. It only takes 5 minutes to adjust them. If a gib is too tight, it's difficult or impossible to move a table with its crank. If it's too loose, the table will wobble or there will be side-to-side play, which could wreak havoc with precision drilling operations. The Palmgren user manual says the vise is warrantied for 2 years but their color brochure on vises says there is a lifetime guarantee?
I mounted the CV80 on a large drill press. Even with the previous 4.5" cross vise mounted on the table of that press, it was difficult to crank the table upward without pulling up on said table. (The press's cast-iron table and support are also very heavy.) Because of this, I rigged a counter-weight system using garage springs, which pulls UP on the table with 50 lbs. of force. With this vise, I had to change to stronger springs. (Read my review of the Delta 17-925 to see photos of this Rube Goldberg apparatus.)
Without some type of counter-weight system for your drill press table, this vise would be quite difficult to raise via the drill press crank. You would have to pull up on the drill press table really hard, while rotating the crank. If the handle is plastic, like the one on my Delta drill press, it could break under the stress.
Except for the crank handles needing modification, the vise is very well done. The painting and cast-iron machining are quite precise. The vise jaws align perfectly with one another. One side touches the other without any air gaps. Everything works as it should. Nothing binds, and it performs as expected. As my previous cross vise was frequently too small for my projects, it's really nice to have that issue solved. This unit works just like the smaller, much more common, cross vises. If you want a large cross vise, this one (or the identical Sears model) appears to be the only choice.
It's impossible to make a sturdy 8" cross-vise that isn't quite heavy, but if you're planning to put it on a drill press, that very weight should be a major consideration before buying this vise. Lower your drill press table 2', place 82 lbs. on in, and then attempt to raise the table with the hand crank. This will simulate raising a CV80.
The vise itself is a 5-star item, but I rated it at 4 stars because Palmgren's cardboard packaging was terrible, and the hand cranks needed modification.
UPDATE: I e-mailed Palmgren regarding CV80 packaging, crank-handles, manual having an error, and the guarantee discrepancy. Their response follows:
Thank you for your comments, they are very constructive. I have some answers for your questions & comments:
1. We are reviewing our carton specs on products over 80 lbs that are shipped UPS, seems we have the most trouble with those. As for your building a crate to ship the broken unit back to Amazon, our apologies for not informing you of Palmgren's guarantee. We would have shipped you a replacement product without having to return the damaged one.
2. According to our quality control dept, we did have an issue with the feed screws being too long. We fixed the problem at the source & re-worked the problem units. Apparently yours slipped through the re-work process. Thank you for alerting us about this as we will be spot checking that lot of vises to double-check them. Again, our apologies for you having to machine the vise.
3.Thank you for pointing out the error in the Manual.
4. All Palmgren Cross-slide vises come with a lifetime guarantee. We are aware that several of our Manuals state the two year guarantee. We are in the process of changing that information as we update the manuals.

Great for the priceAug 27, 2011
By BKinter The vise is great for the price. I wasn't expecting much and was actually slightly impressed once it arrived. Aside from the packaging being highly insufficient (item was nearly falling through the hole in the bottom) the item was in great shape. It does require some slight adjustment for the guiding tracks. The tighter you make them, the less slope but the harder to turn the handles. The Y direction seems much smoother than the X for whatever reason and I am wondering if something got tweaked during shipment. I clamped this to my drill press as a low budget mill for some small wood projects and am thrilled with the outcome. The eight inches is hard to fit (lol) on the table but it will be great once I upgrade to a larger press or mill. My only gripe is the slight slope in the X direction that occurs at the same crank position so it must have something to do with how the worm catches in one direction. Again, for the price it was better than expected.

Took two to get one good one.Apr 23, 2011

The first one we got was damaged; one of the shafts was bent and the threads on the end were blunted. So we tried to get a new shaft sent. Instead they sent a whole new vice. When it came we found a different shaft was damaged on this one worse than the first one. So we took one shaft from the first put, put it in the 2nd one and got one good vice and sent back the one which now has 2 damaged shafts.
The reason for the damage is poor packing. These should be double boxed. It's a 84# vice in a card board box. Yes, they have little pieces of wood at the ends of each shaft, but in both boxes due to the flimsy boxes and low, low grade styrofoam, they distort and the blocks of wood fall out. Both boxes had at least one of the shafts sticking outside of the box. If they double boxed it with 4" of packing all around it'd probably save the vice and it would not change the shipping charges a penny since they are already paying for an 84# box. Instead they ship it, it gets damaged, send it back, and they reship it again in a box almost guaranteed to fail again. :(
I also called Palmgren and they were supposed to send a replacement shaft.... that was weeks ago. So far it's never shown up.
To the vice itself. It's pretty good. Not high end but good enough for the average garage type setting. It's not for precise work. The adjustment arms have graduations on them, but the vice itself has .015-.020" play in the shafts, so you can't go by the graduations.
For the price you get a "good" vice. Nothing fantastic, but good.
On my fourth viseSep 04, 2011
By ChevelleRob I wish I was able to review this product. However every one I have received was damaged. This 84lb vise arrived in single layer cardboard box. The traversing rods were sticking out of the box and were damaged, preventing you from screwing the nut on. Yes, on all four vises, one of them had cement embedded in the rod and the allen key bolts in the side of the vise. Hardware was missing in two of the boxes. The packaging is totally inadequate for this heavy of a package. I have read that the 3 inch precision cross slide is packaged much better, I will be returning this 8 inch for the fourth time and I will give that one a shot. If I could buy this at a store it might be okay, but apparently shipping is not working.
