5Happy I Bought ItFeb 26, 2006
By Kenneth Clench
I purchased the Palmgren 80172 drillpress after careful research on it and competing brands such as Jet, Delta, Craftsman, and others. For work on my gun stock(s) and other shop projects, I want precise tolerances; the Palmgren is money well spent. It arrived in a timely manner, it assembles easily (you'll need an extra person to help lift the heavy head assembly in to position), and the drilled holes in the gun stock came out perfect. Their customer service regarding a small piece that was broken on arrival was met with more than satisfactory results (after a short letter to the general manager). I am very happy with this purchase.

2I think I got a lemon.Sep 13, 2007
By Jon Wheeler "Maple Ridge Woodworks"
I purchased this drill press about two years ago. I am a woodworker and was attracted to the size of this drill press and the accuracy claims of very little runout. Well, I still have this drill and use it almost daily but I wish I had purchased a different drill press to begin with. Let me highlight the pros and cons of this drill press as per my experience with it.
Pros: Operates very quietly, nice size for a woodshop-plenty of power for most drilling operations, speeds are easy to change, initial setup and fine tuning was simple, packaging was fantastic, arrived in perfect condition, outstanding customer service.
Cons: Has the wrong kind of table top for a woodshop(I should have noticed that before I purchased it) the table top is the style used for metal working.(I built my own wood tabletop for it with a fence and replaceable center inserts and am happy enough with that now), several serious problems encountered after setup-terrible runout, improperly machined parts wouldn't drive the spindle, couldn't move belt positions to change speeds, difficult to swing table around main column(gearing strip for raising and lowering table catches at bottom), occaisionally the chuck falls out(pretty exciting with a sharp forstner bit mounted in there!)
Customer service was great about helping me help them figure out what the various problems were and they sent a number of replacement parts right away. I got to pretty much re-build the innerworkings of the drill press (more than once) which was kind of neat to learn about but... I still am not happy with spindle runout but I live with it. I ended up keeping the old Ryobi benchtop drill press I was intending to replace and still use that frequently, especially where accuracy is more important.
I'm glad to see other people have had better experiences with this drill press than me. This drill press will probably be working in my shop for many decades to come, it is constructed quite solidly. Wish I would have ended up with one of these that wasn't a lemon. For the more $500+ this drill press cost it has been a headache and a dissappointment. Woodworkers would be much looking for a well costructed drill press made specifically for the needs of woodworkers.

5A Very Good Tool!Jun 14, 2006
By J. Laskody "waddie"
Took delivery of a Palmgren 80172 17" drill press last week. It took less than 45 minutes to assemble, not counting the time it took for a buddy to show up to help lift the heavy head into place. It is a heavy piece of machinery and runs extremely quiet and with no sign of vibration. The manufacturer claims the runout to be less the 0.0005 inches and that plus the heavy weight and the low speed range is what sold me on this drill press. It is a high quality machine and will do everything I want it to and the price ($459 with free shippping and a 2 year warranty)was very reasonable. I would recommend the Palmgren 80172 drill press to anybody in the market for a quality tool.

5Palmgren Model 80172 Drill PressFeb 20, 2007
By D. Samsel
I had no problem with setup. As stated in other reviews, unless you are King Kong, you will need another person to assist in setup. I was pleasantly surprised at the relative quietness of operation. This product is obviously well made.

4table rotate rackMar 08, 2010
By S. Piazza "Sal"
When you try to rotate the table horizontally around the main post the rack tends to bind on the bottom collar. Needs better engineering.
