4Great toolDec 31, 2009
By D. Pannell "Dave"
I bought this item 11/07. I have used it for every hollow form i've made so far since the first time i used it. The square tip is great. Just press it directly into the center of the piece, gouge a small hole as long as the bit, and then catch about 1/8" or so of the side of the tip, on the top edge of that center hole, and just pull nice and easy to the desired wall wall thickness, removing more material and deepening the center hole as you go, till you get to the desired depth.
It favors high speed and slightly high centerline to work at it's best.

Then, to even up the "step pyramid" walls left by the square tip, you mount the round tip scraper, and working from the bottom of the inside, pull it very slowly up the inside wall, knocking off the edges and taking deeper cuts until it the desired thickness and texture. Then you can mount the big flat scraper and make light little shear cuts, evening out the whole thing.

Very handy tool. But it only goes like 6" deep. You will need it's big brother, the Hollowmaster for more depth. It also has a curved neck for better reach, unlike this one. Overall, great tool, and I won't work the same without it. It is integral in most all of my turnings.

The allen bolt holding the whole bit compression part on, will strip. watch it. it doesn't take much at all.

5Great, easy to use toolApr 24, 2009
By Robert Bredlie
I've been using this tool for 4 months now and I love it. The hollowing tips make fast work of everything I have tried them on without the occasional grabs I get with a fingernail grind bowl gouge. And it is a LOT easier to sharpen.

I also really like the ability to rotate the scraper tip to conform to different shapes. I liked this tool enough to buy a second one so I could keep the scraper tip on one and the hollowing tip on the other.

5Great for bowl makingApr 06, 2008
By E. Holmquist
I got this while struggling to make bowls where the rim is narrower than it's widest point using a conventional bowl gouge. I am not doing the narrow aperature hollow forms, just slightly narrower rims.

I also found that the rotating scraper let me avoid having to buy a bunch of scrapers. I still use my heavy duty outboard scraper on bowls, but for my less common scraping tasks, I avoided having to buy tools that I would only use occasionally.
