5See SAWJan 30, 2010
By Edward J. Joy "louietrips"
The Skill 4290-02 4.5 Amp saw is a replacement for a Craftsman Saw that I have no complaints with. The Skill is a plug in and the Craftsman is a Battery. The Skill Saw is one excellent choice. The price is reasonable and so far the quality and performance is second to none. It feels and handles exceptionally. The bit change is quick and effortless. The cuts are accurate and precise. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

5Great product, especially for the moneyJan 17, 2011
By Lawrence M. Hufty "lmhufty"
I am very happy with this Variable Speed Jig Saw, especially for the money. It has a strong motor, the variable controls work well, and it appears to be built quite well. I really like the container located in the bottom portion for storing blades, an issue I always seem to have. You must remember, though, this is a basic model. No laser light for guidance, only one blade supplied, and no case. But for less than $35, it is a great buy. Just don't expect anything but a basic jig saw. Would I buy again? In a heartbeat. Like I said, it is well made, it works, and the price is great.

5It works!Sep 29, 2010
By Peter Hawthorn Binkley
The overall feel of this jigsaw is solid and durable. Variable speed is nice and works fine. The motor feels very strong, and I expect to enjoy many years of use. I use mine for modifying computer cases, for which it's perfect. I'm sure to find hundreds more uses too. A must for any reasonable power tool collection. Skil on the whole makes solid, reliable basic budget power tools. This jigsaw is no exception.

5Skil, Milwaukee, Black & Decker ComparisonDec 20, 2011
By Norm's Garage
I have used 2 jigsaws one from each end of the spectrum. At one end a Milwaukee 6266, at the other a B&D. I have gotten by with the B&D for a long time, but it is a most unpleasant experience in the process. The Milwaukee makes jigsawing fun again, but you get what you pay for. The 4290 leans closer to the Milwaukee end.

Here is what I like about the 4290. Out of the box it has a sturdy feel. All the parts seem robust. Cheaper saws feel jiggly. The foot, especially, is where jigsaws tend to skimp. The 4290 has a chunky base that feels like it stays put, square, and level over time. Another feature I like is the dial-in cutting speed. This feature, as on the Milwuakee, keeps a smooth steady pace as you go.

In terms of cutting capacity; 2x4 test - negative, the wood will cut your jigsaw first; 3/4" - accurate as Milwaukee but not as fast; laminate - piece of cake. Even with this entry level offering, the Skil brand impresses me with what they give you - features, quality, and cutting experience of a high end model, at a bargain price.

3Not for thick materialJan 28, 2012

I tried to cut a fairly flat curve on a 2x6 using this jigsaw (with a very good Bosch blade) and it was basically impossible.
