solid saw, what more do you need?Mar 31, 2009
By Z. Abedin

i bought one of these saws to cut some plywood after discovering my dad's craftsman had rusty and dull blade. The price of a new blade was close to the price of this entire new saw, so i bought the saw intending to use it really only once, and didn't expect much. After using it that one time, i found myself looking for new projects which involved using a circular saw. The blade it comes with makes a very clean cut, and the saw itself has more than enough power to cut through anything you might throw at it. I even used this saw to make beveled cuts in 2x4, without a problem.
Since then, a group I work with has bought two more for use in an annual construction project, and these two saws get used for several hours a day, everyday, over the span of a month. Both of these two saws have performed flawlessly over the last two years, and we're very happy with the purchases.

Good for the right applicationsMay 29, 2009

I can't justify spending very much money on a circular saw. I'm a part-time remodeler, not a professional carpenter, so take that caveat for what its worth. I can't justify the money for a worm-drive saw, especially since they're so much heavier. The circular saw isn't a tool I use very often for really heavy-duty applications anyway. The miter saw and sawzall both get considerably more use. For most applications with dry wood and non-beveled cuts, this saw has more than enough power. If you need to do a lot of jobsite bevel cuts at 2 inches deep, this saw might not have enough power. I prefer a table saw for those applications. With a sharp blade, this saw easily cuts through any nominally sized 2 inch lumber and plywood. And for most homeowners and DYIers, isn't that enough? I've used this saw for many remodeling applications, and it has held up just fine.
Save yourself some money on this tool and put that saved money towards a good miter saw or nailer.

Good Solid General Purpose Circular Saw For The Non-Professional CraftsmanMay 07, 2008
By G. P. WHITEHOUSE Skil has been making this basic model for well over 25 plus years now. I purchased my first one when I bought my first house at age 25. I'm now 50. It just recently gave up the ghost a couple of days ago.
Just like a wheel bearing on your car, these things have a main bearing that goes bad after 300-400 hours of use. The motor brushes should also be replaced at the same time as the bearing.
I'll probably end up fixing the old one with a new bearing and bushings as it would seem a shame to throw away an old friend.
I definitely will not be taking the old one to my local Goodwill store and dumping it off for the next guy to pick up and hazardously use with worn bearings. That would be bad Karma.
So if this new saw is constructed every bit as good as they were being built way back when I bought my first one, then this replacement should last me up until age 75. Not sure if I should still be using one by that time, but that's my game plan.
Highly recommended for the non-professional for general around the home use.

Great SawMar 07, 2008
By Jason A. Killen Recently I retired my fathers old Craftsman saw. It was about 25 years old, weighted about 9 pounds, been dropped any number of times, and the cord was patched (I cut it 4 times), and it cut almost square.
I bought this saw as a replacement mostly cause I got a good deal on it. After so many years lugging around my dads old saw, we nick named it the Mayflower, I've been very happy with the switch. The depth adjustment is easy. It comes with a wrench that stores in the guard so you don't have to head back to the shed when you need to change the blade.
Maybe I just have future shock but I think this is a great saw for the weekender.

works great for my small woodworking projectNov 21, 2011
By Karen Warner This saw did just what I needed to build a platform for a pellet stove. I was a little concerned that the 18-tooth blade included might not cut fine enough on my 2x4's and plywood, but there was no problem at all with the quality of the cuts. (Everything was covered by tile anyway.)
My first circular saw and I feel like it did its job very well.
