I thought I'd write a review on this, since there's basically no information on the net about it.
This tool is used by me to sharpen the steel knives in a shaper molding head: Search Amazon for this, and you will see what I mean:
CMT 692.013.09 13 Piece 3 1/8-by-3/4-Inch Multiprofile Cabinet and Joinery Shaper Cutter Set
Amana makes a similiar system. Its knives also have a hole spacing of 24 mm. So you can use this on CMT and Amana knives. Probably most knife insert systems will work, but be sure and check.
The directions also say it will sharpen blades with a 19 mm hole spacing.. this is the "paint scraper blades" that they are referring to. But obviously, you need to double check before buying this. Don't rely on my memory.
One nice thing about this is that it comes with an additional universal tool rest with microadjust. That adds a lot of value. When you aren't using this jig to sharpen the knives, you can set up the extra tool rest for the leather wheel (or have a second rest for the stone). Saves you from having to move the other tool rest around.
Operation: Two tool rests are installed. A platform is fastened to that (see picture on amazon). Then the jig (part with two handles) holds the knife and is slid over the stone. The jig is comprised of a magnet to hold the knife. There are pegs placed in the jig to keep the knife from moving during sharpening (thus the restriction on hole spacing). I guess if you wanted to, you could drill additional peg holes in the jig to accomodate different hole spacings.
Is this jig worth it? I have only sharpened one set of knifes so far, and it worked well. Since the knives are roughly $20 each, it won't take too long for this jig to earn its purchase price back. For me, it's worth it. I will add this though.. other people sharpen these knives by rubbing the flat side against a sharpening stone. That's a viable option too (although slower).
I think a head with steel shaper knives and this sharpening jig is an extremely cost efficient way to run a shaper for a hobbyist. Much more economical than buying carbide shaper cutters.
One final note, the documentation says that you can typically sharpen a knife 6 times. If you do it more than that, the knife becomes too thin to be safe..
