If you've ever used the Porter Cable 4212 Dovetail Jig, you will undoubtedly need one of these bits! Whiteside makes a carbide tip bit that will outlast the original that comes with the Jig. These bits are ultrasharp and hold their edge very well, even in the curly maple that I used to make my drawers. When you use the "odd" size dovetail bit D7-531 CARBIDE-TIP 2 FLUTE DOVETAIL ROUTER BIT 7 DEGREE X 17/32 LG DIA X 3/4" CUT DEPTH X 1/2" SH that comes with the kit, you must use the "odd" size straight bit (13/32"). What I didn't realize, and they don't tell you in the basic instruction manual that comes with the 4212 jig, is that you can use other combinations of dovetail and straight bit, as long as the combined sum of the 7° dovetail and straight bit is 15/64". If you own one of these (4210, 4212 or 4216) jigs, then you should go to the company web site to download the advanced manual. ([...]) This manual is very informative and is a must have. Back to the straight bit, you can't go wrong with a Whiteside bit made for this jig.
